The inaugural Harwell JAPAN DAY took place at Harwell Campus in the United Kingdom — a groundbreaking platform for exploring new possibilities for collaboration between Japan and the UK. The event featured panel discussions on space, quantum technologies, life sciences, AI, and energy, alongside exhibitions by Japanese small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The participating factory owners embodied ambition, passion, and an unwavering commitment to continuous evolution. These craftspeople engaged directly with UK engineers and university researchers, creating dynamic knowledge exchanges.
Seven Japanese SMEs participated, representing some of the finest examples of traditional Japanese manufacturing craftsmanship combined with cutting-edge technology.
Institutional support was strong throughout the event. Speakers included Member of Parliament Naeko Ishii, representatives from UK Research and Innovation (STFC), and leaders from organisations such as JAXA and the Francis Crick Institute.
Sessions covered five key thematic areas:
Feedback from all participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted the unique value of face-to-face engagement at Harwell Campus. Being physically present — walking the same grounds as Nobel Prize-winning researchers — created spontaneous conversations and connections that simply cannot be replicated online.
Several concrete follow-up discussions were initiated, with multiple SMEs expressing strong interest in longer-term collaboration with Harwell-based research organisations.
Building on this momentum, Harwell Japan Day 2026 is scheduled for October 21, 2026 at Quad3, Harwell Campus — with expectations for even greater achievements as the Japan-UK partnership continues to evolve.
